How are Twitch and YouTube during the COVID-19 outbreak?

By Ivan Munoz

COVID-19 has left its mark across the globe in the past month and many civilians are either required to stay home from work, not allowed to go outside, and to stand six feet away from another human being. With people staying home, there is going to be a lot of the earth's population on the internet. So how has this helped streaming sites such as Twitch or YouTube?

First things first, what is Twitch and YouTube?

Twitch and YouTube are some of the most famous websites known where people get to play games live, interact with viewers and even make videos. Twitch.tv is strictly only for live-streams and is currently the biggest live-streaming platform while on YouTube, you can do both livestream and make videos. Now to many big streamers or content creators, this is a full-time job, and to some, it can even be a part time thing.

With the rise of COVID-19, people’s use of social media has grown immensely, and this has helped out many content creators.

As of right now, according to twitchtracker.com, twitch.tv has a total of 89,676 people live-streaming, and over TWO MILLION WATCHING!

YouTube has come a long way since it’s first upload in 2005. It is currently the biggest video site in the world and has also seen a huge increase in videos uploaded and live-streams being broadcasted. According to merchdope.com there are currently over one billion people who have used YouTube since its start, almost five billion videos watched daily, and over three hundred hours full of videos are uploaded each minute onto YouTube!

How Video Games have helped both companies

Twitch and YouTube are two companies that have grown immensely because of the gaming community and continue seeing an upside in gaming content on their platforms.

Not only have people been using social media during this outbreak, but they have also been playing video games in their free time!

Fortnite, Animal Crossing (released 2 weeks ago), Call of Duty, and even Minecraft have been insanely active on YouTube and Twitch. They are the top games being live-streamed or even made content on at the moment and multiple channels making content on these games have seen an increase in subscribers, followers, and hours watched on their channels.

Although COVID-19 has been taking the world by storm and this has caused many people to stay home, content creators are helping by providing entertainment to many fans and also by practicing social distancing. Stay safe my fellow gamers.
