My first PA gig at Super Bowl LIV

By Angela Miranda

This wholesome experience with FOX News was nothing but a dream! Imagine, I’m a student with barely any media work experience, I’ve done my own packages and edited them, but nothing like working for an actual news network. Best of all is that I got to work with celebrities and various T.V. talents for the FOX news Super Bowl live broadcast.

It all started when I received an email with an opportunity to be a production assistant for FOX during the Superbowl?! I couldn’t help but reply instantly. A couple of days later, I was asked to complete a background check and I was in. This is the happiest I’ve been in a while!

Day one finally came, and I was a nervous wreck. I had never worked in a production environment before so I didn’t know what to expect. I thought that my job tasks would consist of writing scripts, setting up lights, cameras and other technical tasks. Little did I know that FOX news has specific workers for each of those tasks.

In the production assistant role, which was what I got hired for, we were mainly interns grasping as much experience as we could while running to get coffee, food, etc. for the crew and hosts. Other job roles consisted of picking up credentials, stocking up the catering room, ordering lunch, setting up the make up rooms, running errands for the production managers, and alot more busy work. Anything the talents and guests needed, we had to cater to them, so they got what they wanted no matter what.

Here’s an example: the temperatures dropped to the mid 50’s and while Fox and Friends was on commercial break, host Ainsley Earhardt said that she wanted soup because she was cold. My duty at that moment was to try to find chicken noodle soup as soon as possible for Ainsley, Brian Kilmeade, and Steve Docey. I couldn’t find a place at the time, so I ran to the catering tent and asked for chicken broth and the caters came through!

I enjoyed the aspect of making celebrities and T.V. hosts feel like regular people, because out of the set they’d get mobbed and asked for autographs and selfies by fans.

The whole experience gave me a lot of exposure and I got to meet and see different directors, producers, technical operators, managers, and celebrities like Lil Wayne and Offset. It was very interesting. The whole experience got me more motivated and excited for my future.
