The Hampton House

Updated: Feb 23, 2022

The Hampton house is a historic landmark in Miami, Florida. The Hampton House was a motel back in the 1950’s and 60’s. The reason why it is so historic is because so many African-American leaders , activists , performers and athletes have come by the motel. During this time, The Hampton house was the place to be seen as a go to spot in the community.

In 1954, The Booker Terrace Motel opened in Miami, Florida. It was renamed the Hampton House motel in 1961. In 1964 Cassius Clay A.K.A Muhammad Ali was scedule to figh Sonny Listen in Miami. Ali also trained at the Fifth St Gym in Miami, Florida. On February 25, 1964 All of the African American heroes were in town ; African American prophet Malcom X, Singer and songwriter Sam Cooke , NFL running back Jim Brown and Ali. They all celebrated the victory of Muhaamad Ali against Sonny Liston. Also in April 1965 Martin Luther King came to Miami, Florida for press conferences , lectures and he also stayed at the Historical Hampton House.

As segregation laws began in the 1960’s members of the Liberty City community dispersed to other miami neighborhoods. This left the neighborhoods of Miami stunned as the Hampton house closed down in 1976. It remained abandoned for a while until the early 2000’s when the county purchased it and turned it into a historical site where you can take a tour and pictures of the historical landmark.

The Hampton House is so legendary that in 2020 Regina King produced a film called “One Night In Miami” reflecting on the night all 4 of the african american heroes were all together in miami at the Hampton House. This film was nominated for so many awards one of them being an oscar award.
