Racist Discrimination in the NFL

Updated: Feb 23, 2022

Brian Flores is suing 3 Nfl teams (Dolphins, Giants, and Broncos) for hiring malpractices and racist discrimination.

This case is based on alleged discrimination practices regarding his head coaching interview processes with Denver and New York and his firing last month by Miami. Brain Flores was the Miami Dolphins head coach for 3 years and was fired on Jan. 10 despite leading recording the Dolphins' to first back-to-back winning seasons since 2003 (10-6 in 2020, 9-8 in 2021) and being one of the candidates for Coach of the Year.

Flores stated that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross attempted to incentivize him to lose games on purpose, shortly after he was hired in 2019, which is completely against any moral and league rules in all of sports. Ross was allegedly offering Flores $100,000 for every game they lost that season. Flores says that as the team won games late in the season, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier told him Ross was infuriated with the on-field success was worsening the teams draft position.. Instead of focusing on being a winning franchise both the owners and managers of the club were wanting to receive the potential number 1 pick in the draft, which now turned out to be Joe Burrow who is currently about to lead the Cincinnati Bengals in their super bowl and won their first playoff games in over 34 years.

These misunderstandings on where they stood as a franchise and what the vision was for the Dolphins going forward ultimately led to Flores being fired after an amazing 2021-2022 season which saw them almost make it into the playoff and finish with a record of 9-8 amongst the best teams in the AFC.

Dolphins aren't the only team involved in this, the Giants also played a big part as back in 2019 the giants were looking to hire a new head coach and there were many candidates in the running such as Flores who even had an interview. It turned out to be a complete sham, they were interviewing him due to the Rooney Rules which the NFL has implemented which requires teams to interview coaches of a minority descent. In an alleged text from New England Patriots coach, Bill Bellick, the Giants had already selected their next head coach before the interview even took place, it was just all to comply with the rule and they had no intention of hiring Flores. This was also the same case with the Denver Broncos as they called Flores in for a head coach interview and when they arrived Flores recalled that they had been drinking heavily the night before and didn't conduct the interview with much intention as they arrived at the interview an hour late and very hungover.

All teams have responded to the allegations with statements on Tuesday, and this is a case that we will have to keep up with for further updates, with Brain Flores even going on ESPN’s show Get Up to speak on what has been going on. He stated "God has gifted me with a special talent to coach the game of football, but the need for change is bigger than my personal goals, In making the decision to file the class action complaint today, I understand that I may be risking coaching the game that I love and that has done so much for my family and me. My sincere hope is that by standing up against systemic racism in the NFL, others will join me to ensure that positive change is made for generations to come."
