On February 7th, down judge Sarah Thomas will be getting ready to make history. The NFL announced on Tuesday that Thomas will serve as a down judge on referee Carl Cheffers’ crew at Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida.
Thomas first joined the NFL in 2015 as being the first female on-field official at the time. The NFL normally assembles its Super Bowl crew based on eligibility – which is a minimum of five years of experience is required – as well as in season performance. Thomas has previously worked a total of four postseason games in six seasons in the league.
In a statement, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said: “Sarah Thomas has made history again as being the first female Super Bowl official. Her elite performance and commitment to excellence has earned her this prestigious honor to officiate this year's Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah on this well-deserved honor.
