As you all may know, It’s Red Cross Month and we should give thanks to our everyday heroes for fulfilling our humanitarian mission to help those who’ve been impacted by home fires, local disasters, or outbreaks especially this ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that forced a lot of people out of work and who are struggling to provide food and shelter for their families and loved ones.
Red Cross History
Since President Franklin D. Roosevelt started this tradition back in 1943, a lot of U.S. presidents have stressed the importance of Red Cross Month where Americans gain recognition for their contributions and sacrifices towards its humanitarian mission that is engineered by a workforce which is composed of volunteers. This month long tradition is capped off with the seventh annual, Red Cross Giving Day which occurs on March 24, where local communities come together on this day to help thousands of families who’ve been impacted by a global crisis. On Giving Day, landmarks and buildings across the U.S. are illuminated “red” in celebration of this month.
If you’re interested in making an impact for Red Cross Month here are a few ways you can make a difference:
Donate
Every minute that goes by, someone is affected by a global crisis and is being cared for by the Red Cross so go ahead and support their relief efforts by donating a special gift to provide emotional support. It can be clothes, food, or money. If you’re interested in donating, please visit this website: redcross.org/GivingDay.
Volunteer
When help can’t wait, local communities are providing families with the support they need so if you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please visit redcross.org/VolunteerToday to view any available positions including virtual opportunities.
Learn Life Saving Skills
Please visit redcross.org/TakeAClass to sign up to take a CPR and first aid class to be better prepared for emergencies or you can sign up for virtual classes due to Covid-19.
Give Blood
Even though extreme weather conditions have forced the cancellations of Red Cross blood drives across the U.S., please make an effort to find a local Big Red Bus and donate to those who are struggling with health conditions.
